Monday Musings “When I was your age…”
I have a confession to make. I’m older than my friends.
I’ve never been the most mature of adults, and I’m quite lucky that I look young for my age (thanks mum). I mean, I can honestly say I remember most of the 90s. I have friends who were just learning their multiplication tables when I was graduating from high school.
I guess I’m of that lucky in-between generation that managed to get a job straight out of uni. I wasn’t any more qualified than some of my friends who are looking for work now, but I scraped in under the post at the age of 22 because I was in the right place at the right time. Did I know what I wanted to be back then? Not a chance. I had little concept of the outside world other than my own life, my own friends, and maybe what I was going to make for dinner.
So I admire my friends who are in their early 20s. Who are activists, who are so aware of the issues, and who have a level of emotional maturity and confidence I definitely didn’t. I hate to say “when I was their age”, but it’s true. They have to deal with social media in a way I couldn’t even fathom when I was 19, 0r 21, or even 25.
So though I am only just figuring myself out now at an age when I should be a “proper” grown up, I am so impressed at how together and level-headed my friends are. The know things. They’ve experienced things. They aren’t afraid to speak up.
They are simply exceptional.
